The irony of the Special Forces expansion for Battlefield 2 is that it really isn't about the special forces at all. The title refers to new factions like the British SAS, the Russian Spetsnaz, the US Navy Seals, and, uhh, yeah, let's go ahead and give the Middle Eastern Coalition some elite troops who might do things like, say, storm US aircraft carriers. Why not? And since our special forces can't always be fighting each other, how about some generic rebels to stand in for latter-day insurgents like Chechens and Iraqis? But for all the new characters, it's really the new maps and a few new items that provide the "special" in Special Forces. Unfortunately, in the tradition of many Battlefield launches, the whole thing seems to have been shipped before it was finished.

Mundane Forces

Frankly, there's nothing the least bit special about these supposedly new factions, who are little more than old classes in new skins. Electronic Arts continues to shy away from the asymmetry that gave Battlefield: Vietnam so much of its flavor, albeit balance problems (although as anyone running from Battlefield 2's air power can tell you, Vietnam hardly cornered the market on balance problems). Whatever the reason, EA is playing it safe. The most notable thing about the new factions is that the SAS get super-cool British accents, complete with a sexy female controller announcing things like your UAV running out of fuel.
